I recently had a chance to sit down with Chris Lewis on his work ethic, the jewellery industry and his plans for the next five years, this is what we spoke about;

How did you get into the jewellery business?

“My curiosity got the best of me. I was in my first year of university, working in the music & event industry. However, the coronavirus lockdown hit home and I found myself lost and confused because my entire business model of planning raves and hosting events to make profit was now in major turmoil due to the fact that there was government restrictions imposed upon us. I always found myself fascinated by jewellers like Bobby White and Johnny Dang, so I took the risk and bought jewellery equipment and never looked back since.”

What are some of the best pieces you think you’ve designed?

“The “RLoui$’ pendant, no doubt about it.

I strive in value, qualilty and longevity. My company is built on all three of these fundamentals, and no corners were cut when creating jewellery for my clientele. This piece for me, personally, was a standpoint to set the benchmark with me going forward in the industry I work in.

Another piece to be proud of was “The Chandelier” ring that I designed and created. This piece alone has 135 individual hand set baguette-cut stones, finished with a emerald cut centre to make the piece dazzle just a bit more. This was a huge stepping stone for me as I pushed the limits of what I thought was achievable with my stone-setting skills.”

What type of clients do you deal with on a daily basis?

“My client base is extremely varied. This due to the fact that I’m a walking advertisement for my business. Whenever I see someone wear jewellery in public, I give them my business card, and tell them to contact me if they ever want any private pieces. However, business isn’t just all about flexing with that new VVS piece, most of my time is spent on giving out quotes and sourcing materials for client projects. You either hate it or love it. I also work with a range of budgets. I could be dealing with someone who just wants their jewellery polished, or I could be dealing with someone who wants an iced out piece, it all depends on the clientele.”

Have you done any celebrity pieces?

“Not currently, however, I have worked with various VIP clients in my city, providing them an exquisite service that they cannot get anywhere else. However, due to the NDA’s that I’ve signed with them, I’m not allowed to publicly disclose who it is.”

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

“Progressing, everyday above ground is a blessing. I never want to stop learning. I dread to be stuck in my ways, you can always hone and improve your craft and gain more skills. I personally see myself with a private network of people who all help each other to reach their goals. Furthermore, most importantly, I want to be in a position to give something back to my friends and family, without their constant support I wouldn’t be where I am today let alone the person I’ll become in five years.”
